What should you do if you lost a tooth in an accident?

What is tooth avulsion? Avulsion is the removal of the tooth with its root from the alveolus or bone = accidental extraction. This can occur as a result of a trauma, accident, assault or contact sport.

Can that tooth still be saved/replaced? YES!!!!

But in certain conditions, which depend on the patient's attitude:

  • The tooth must be replanted in the bone as soon as possible, ideally within the first 30 minutes after the accident!

  • The tooth must be whole (including the root)!

  • Avoid touching the root of the tooth (it has fibers and ligaments that will help replantation)!

  • If the tooth is dirty, you can wash it with milk or physiological serum. It is essential not to let the tooth dry out - this way you have several options to transport it to the dentist: either in the saliva/in the mouth under the tongue or to the cheek, or transport it in a container with milk or saline serum or salty water!

Once you arrive at the dentist, he will replant the tooth in the corresponding socket under local anesthesia, immobilize it and monitor its evolution.

ATTENTION: in general temporary/milk teeth do not replant, so we are talking here about the permanent dentition (children over 6-7 years and adults).
